The Life/Career Success System - Know Your Purpose

Know yourself know your purpose plan your career.

In the planning of your career there is a very fundamental issue that needs to be addressed and many of us do not spend enough time working on it. When we plan a holiday, a party or our wedding we spend a great deal of time working out what we really want. Alas all too often people when questioned about their careers may mention that they ‘fell into their career’ that it really wasn’t what they wanted but what they got.

The best way to go about working on planning your career is to spend time on some deep soul searching and introspection to find out what is really important to you.

The Inner Self - Self Knowledge

You are the most important aspect of your life. Your career is not your life however it does
play a significantly important role in your life. Before you can determine what that role will be, you must ask yourself these following questions:

  ·  What do I value most?
  ·  What kind of life do I really want?
  ·  What do I want my life to look like, to feel like?
  ·  Who do I want to be?

You are the only one who will determine your life’s desire or purpose.

FIND OUT WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU!

The pleasurable emotional states are in the main the states that we will move towards. We value these more than others. Some of them are listed below - however we still value some of these more than others, we don’t value them all equally. We have a hierarchy of values and in the course of our lives and at different stages in our careers these will change; beginning work life, mid career life and final stages of career life the values hierarchy will be quite different. Go ahead and list the following values and their importance to you in your life right now.

1. LOVE
2. SUCCESS
3. FREEDOM
4. MONEY
5. SECURITY
6. ADVENTURE
7. POWER
8. COMFORT
9. PASSION
10. HEALTH

With introspection and the development of self-awareness you will begin to truly understand what it is you most value in your life. When you have identified these you will know what values will fulfil you, make your life rich and rewarding. Often people set goals without knowing what is they truly value in life, they end up achieving their goals and then say, “Is that all there is?” with no real sense of joy or achievement.

You can now start fresh with your own lists. There is only one question that you need to answer. “What’s most important to me in my life?” Go ahead and brainstorm and find the answer to this question. Write down the values that are most important to you and put them in order, from the most important to the least important.

Take a moment to look at the hierarchy that you have developed and determine what it is that you truly value in life remember, whatever your values are, they affect the direction of your life / career.

What’s most important to me in my life?

Take time to sit down and evaluate your hierarchy of values. You will now be able to establish your Primary Aim. Think carefully about the power behind the aim that you have established - go ahead and write a statement that succinctly captures the essence of it.

My Primary Aim

This process is absolutely essential if your career is to have any meaning beyond work. Your career will become an integral part of your aim. If your career is going to make a major contribution to the realisation of your dream, if your career is going to become a significant component of your Primary Aim - YOU HAVE TO LET YOUR CAREER KNOW WHAT THAT AIM IS! This allows you to understand why your Primary Aim is so important to the success of your career. Once you have developed this clear vision of how you desire your life to be you will now be able to determine the following:

1. Begin to live the life / career you desire.
2. Know what first steps to take.
3. Know how to measure your progress.
4. Know where you were.
5. Know how far you have come.
6. Know how much farther you still have to go.
